In 1985 my greatest achievement and biggest disappointment was my attempt and failure to be the first teacher in space. This was a lot of work. I had to get in physical shape, get letters of recommendations, plan a project, and put together a resume. Over the months I had to prepare I did get physically fit. I thought my plan was great. One person would be selected from each state and from that pool a teacher would be selected to be part of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew to go to outer space. I didn’t make it as a state finalist. I cried a little. Christa McAuliffe was picked to be the first teacher in space and died shortly after launch when the Challenger exploded. I cried a little.
People told me I was lucky that I wasn’t chosen, but I believe in the butterfly effect and if I was chosen the world would be different, maybe better, maybe worse, maybe only minutely changed, but different.
