Recently I took the Master Naturalist class about mammals, a class I had missed last year. Like all the MN classes, it was interesting and informative, but got me to thinking about my sister’s house. Her house is a few years old built on the old family homestead. It has roads on two sides, a woods on the third and corn or beans on the fourth side. It is near Beall Woods. (The locals- formerly me – pronounce it “Bells Woods”, but we are limited on our choice of vowel sounds that close to Kentucky.) I think it is covered with pocket gophers. They have been living and breeding in her yard for at least three years. If they are gophers then the range map needs to be updated. Look at the attached pictures and the links below and tell me what you think. Map of pocket gopher range (from Mammals of Illinois By Donald F. Hoffmeister) Description of and information about Pocket Gophers. |
