I was darning my favorite pair of socks the other week and got to thinking about my grandmother and Aunt Helen. They each had a sock egg. I loved those sock eggs. I liked looking at their shape and the grain of the wood. I miss those sock eggs.
When I was daring my socks the other week I had to use a light bulb. Soon even light bulbs won't be available. They are quickly being replace with Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs. You know, those corkscrew bulbs.
When I was in Mount Carmel last week I looked in the antique stores around there. I found the three shown here, but they just didn't feel right. You don't know where they might have been.
I'm thinking about using a lathe and a limb from the walnut tree in my back yard that my dad planted. He got the start from the Guinea Man's yard. (So called because he raised guineas.) The sock egg has to be just right. If it works out, I'll have to make four of them so I can pass the tradition (skill) on to my grandchildren.
