January 1, 2020
I’m reading “The Warehouse”. It got a lot of hype but isn’t quite what I hoped. I was on the library waiting list two or three months and there are as many people waiting for it now as there was when I first put my name on the list.
The weather is supposed to be beautiful today. My only plans are to take a long walk and maybe finish The Warehouse. I emptied the dishwasher, read a bit and took my walk. It was bright and sunny, but the cold hard wind hurt my ear facing the wind and my other ear facing the wind on the return even though I had a light stocking cap on. It’s noon now.
The only thing different here this year (today) from last year (yesterday) is recreational marijuana is now legal. There were over 500 people lined up this morning at 6:00 AM when the store opened. The store had a large warming tent set up at midnight when people were allowed to begin lining up. I have to go to the grocery store soon. Maybe I’ll stop by NUMeds. It is on the way. There is a huge growing and processing plant near Albion. Devan Swift pointed it out to me the last time we were down there, not that you could have missed it, but there was no signage telling what they were growing there.
Song of the day: Time in a Bottle .

Gosh, I can’t remember much about what I did this morning. I had my coffee and -it’s coming back to me- a bowl of cereal. I checked my bank account and this month’s budget. Ends meet. I looked for the wooden stick that goes with my wooden frog but couldn’t find it. I’ll use a drum stick. It will work as well. I reviewed sounds frogs make for the reptile presentation at the Interpretive Center at Homer Lake we will be making this afternoon. Frog talk is limited to a few words. The same word said by a male says “I’m here and I love you.” when heard by a female and “keep away” when heard by a male. They have a word for “hide, we are in danger”, a word for “let go, I don’t want to be eaten” and one for “get off me, I don’t want to have sex with you.” We had 90 guests at the program. As I was showing a group a box turtle it peed on me. I didn’t know a box turtle could pee so much. Our special guest was our white black snake. Reminds me of the guy Red Green in the Red Green Show.
More about today tomorrow.
Finished the book The Warehouse. It’s a book that makes me think about big issues, but I found the story disappointing. Maybe the author is planning a sequel.
January 3, 2020
I let the dog out at 4:00 AM. I have been trying to understand what is happening in Iraq and planning my day. The only thing on my list right now is to take the grandkids to lunch at Chick-fil-A. They have a nice indoor play area.
We made it, the boys, Peyton and I. We ate, the boys played and Peyton listened to music and texted her friends. Took them home, went grocery shopping and picked up Jimmy John’s for supper.
That’s all folks!!!
January 4, 2020
I woke up this morning with an ear worm, “so it goes”. I often misuse it to end a thought that that kind of hangs there with no ending. I think I woke with it on my mind because I wasn’t satisfied with yesterday’s journal entry.*
It’s from Slaughter House Five, one of the few books I reread every few years.
*This year’s New Year’s resolution is to write the daily highlights of my life in 2020. I am going to try very hard not to write “ditto” every day in reference to the day before. But I might. So it goes.
I’m going to meet Suzanne at the car detailer at 8:30 and take her home. Six of the ladies in my life are going to see “Little Women” and afternoon the movie one of them will take Suzanne to pick up her car.
The rest of the day will be a surprise to me. I’m excited.
Well it was a surprise in that nothing was planned. I went into St. Joe and aired up my tires and drove by the Hallmark movie they are filming downtown.
January 5, 2020
Which will it be?
"War, What is it Good For?"
Or
Don't Worry, Be Happy
I’ve got to think about this one:
How to Improve Your Mental Health
(Caused by stress under Trumps Presidency.)
I started the day by letting Earl out at 3:00 AM, watching an episode of “Servant” and writing this. It is now 4:30 and I’m going back to bed. I’ll read awhile and then probably sleep more.
Plans? My to-do list: Send a scathing letter to Napleton’s. (15 minutes). Done Clean the front porch, stair case and bedroom. Straighten everything else. Done (60 minutes) Make sausage gravy. (45 minutes with cleanup). Done Prepare a lesson for Tuesday at St. Thomas. (30 minutes) Moved to tomorrow. This is 2 hours and 30 minutes accounted for. Right now I don’t feel like doing any of them.
Complete: 1, half of 2, 3
I prepared 3 photos for the “Best of Show” photo contest. Two taken by me, one by Dan.
And that was that.
January 6, 2020
6:00 I’m getting ready to go help Sarah get the kids ready for school. It is their first day this year. When I get home I will pick up Earl and take him to the beauty parlor. I need a gallon of milk so will stop by the store at some point... and pick up Earl.
Sarah needs to get finger printed today for her new job as Post Mistress. I don’t know if I will have to go back and get the boys. Depends.
I didn’t have to go back and get the boys : {( & ( } :
Oh, I remember... I went to town and entered Dan and my photos in the contest, when to the grocery store and another. I made avocado toast for supper.
Oh, and Earl was beautiful.
January 7, 2020
Prepared lesson for St. Thomas. Book: He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands Prepared a tiny lunch because I have a tiny lunchbox. Presented my lesson. Several of the students said the found in very interesting. (Or something like that- they are only 5 or 6 years old.) I had lunch and recess with the students. I took a walk on the KRT. I only went a mile today, but the brisk wind woke me up, so there is that. I fixed veggie burgers for dinner. I made two owls out of black walnut shells I picked up from the yard yesterday. Spent the evening waiting to find out if we will use this time to try to reach a nonviolent solution to today’s attack on airbases by Iran or go to war... They have announced that Trump will postpone talking to us until morning. It will give him more time to get advice from Fox commentators and Putin. Good night.
January 8, 2020
5:00AM
Made coffee and studied a pile of parts, trying to decide how to assemble my “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” I’ve been trying to decide this for two or three years. Now feels like a good time to finish it.
I’m still waiting to find out if we are going to have a much bigger war.
My optimistic guess, Trump will back down insisting the ballistic missiles did no harm.
My pessimistic guess, WAR! We will counter attack.
11:23. Well, no war right now!
Not much today. I watched another episode of “Servant” and hooked up Disney+. Sprayed two coats of clear spray on a cigar box for a project and walked nearly three miles. I spent far too much screen time today. I had two fried baloney sandwiches and ice cream. I made Georgia an avocado toast.
The Illini beat Wisconsin in basketball at Wisconsin in a nail biter (1 point).
January 9, 2020
We slept in the guest room last night. We got a new mattress and it wasn’t ready.
I sprayed a sealant on the inside of the cigar box for my project.
Four out of five grandkids! That’s how many I saw this morning, and I wrote the fifth one.
I’m at the grocery store now to pick up a can of cream of mushroom soup and a few other things.
I made Liz and Pat’s chicken, cheese spaghetti casserole.
I might have finished “the project.”
January 10, 2020
I went to the doctor at 10:45.
I made a snail out of a buckeye.
Pat invited me to list my 10 favorite movies.
January 11, 2020
3:30 AM I chose “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.” (See 1/10/20)

The Great Horned Owl in the yard sounds especially loud and close-by tonight.
I finished the acorn snail. 4/5 of the grand children, Suz, Georgia and I went to the Farmers Market in the Square. Cookies, cup cakes, art coop, Idea Store- something for everyone. I didn’t make turkey chili.
Illinois basket won again last night. They are now in second place in the Big 10.
January 12, 2020
Searching for memories and adding them to “Nick’s Favorites” song list. Reading a novella by Fredrick Pohl, “The Gold at Starbow’s End.”
I’m finished!
I let Earl out and in. I let Earl out and in. I let Earl out and in. I let Earl out and in.
I put the last few dishes in the dish washer and emptied it later. I made turkey chili for supper and peanut butter chocolate no bake cookies just for the heck of it. Cleaned up those messes.
I put LJ’s painting of “Blue Moon” on the wall.

OMG
From my calendar an text messages:
13th: Took the kids to school.
14th: I took the car in for about the 5 time. With my assistance and determination they finally decided it was the car and not my phone. They call the Toyota engineers. The solution? Turn off the car computer and restart it! To do this they had to unhook the battery and wait until all capacitors discharged and then replace the battery. Suzanne worked late. We picked up Emma after school and brought her home. Suzanne picked her up after work.
15th:
Got balloons and a balloon pump and made a balloon dog. I posted it on Facebook and got over 100 reactions. A record for me.
January 16, 2020My slate is clean. Movie: “Doctor Strange Love”. I planted some seeds from $Tree and practiced making some balloon hats and flowers.
“And so it goes.”
“And so it goes.”
January 17, 2020
5:30 AM. I’m watching another episode of “For All Mankind”. It reminds me of “The Right Stuff.”
Another cup of coffee and I’m headed to the Cassem’s. I miss the boys and Peyton. Made it there!
Those kids are so cute, smart and fun. Off to the grocery store to pick up a couple things, then home. Saint Thomas is getting off early for MLK long weekend so we will pick up Emma at 1:45. Her ma will pick her up around 6 or 6:30. Her dad is working the evening shift. I wrote quite a bit, mostly about movies.
January 18, 2020
I checked the rain gauge. .84”
Posted my movie #8- “The Graduate”
About 3:00 I started making ham and beans. At 7:00 the beans were still crunchy. I burnt a pizza for a late supper. At ten o’clock the ham and beans were ready.
And that was it!
January 19, 2020
Slept in late. Got up at 6:30. Coffee.
Balanced budget. Watched another episode of “For All Mankind.” I am now on the way to meet the DeRouchie’s for breakfast at Saint Thomas. Tonight we are all going to Red Lobster... Kayla’s 3rd? birthday party this year. It’s her 14th birthday. I’ll check the rain gauge when I get home. A trace of snow.
Stopped at Walmart and got $70 worth of junk. Stopped at $Tree and got 3 balloon pumps. My desire is to learn everything there is to know. I’m currently learning balloon animals. New information is being discovered so fast it is hard to keep up. And then there is all the information that changes. For example, radio signals aren’t just little fairies carrying messages. At least not in this universe.
A good time was had at the over priced, low quality, great service Red Lobster. We had one guest for each year Kayla had a birthday. Does that mean I have to have 72 guests next month?
January 20, 2020
Light snow. Burr. I had blood taken for my monthly INR check.
Movie: Unforgiven
I made it to give a little blood, took newspapers to the vet and picked up meds for Earl.

This afternoon I cut out red and pink hearts for our Valentine’s Day tree.
I watched two episodes of “Little America.” These are dramatized stories about immigrants. Simple stories but enjoyable.
The title “Little America” reminds me of Shaun, Dad and my biannual trip to Mountain Home, Idaho to visit Uncle Wes and Dad’s parents. We would stop in Marysville, KS to visit with Uncle Gene and stop at Little America and buy firer crackers.
So it goes.
January 21, 2020
I can’t sleep. I tossed and turned until 1:30, got up and made coffee for morning, listened to music and wrote this. Zzz
Took 3 of the grand kids to school. The boys decided they wanted to pack lunches although lunch is provided! It is so darn cute watching them get their lunches together. I looked in Link’s classroom after I walked Phoenix to his room. Link was eating his lunch.
Next stop, St. Thomas. I read them a book and talked about “activating prior knowledge.”
I stopped at $Tree and got some balloon pumps. Did I mention I’m trying to learn EVERYTHING? I was working on quantum mechanics but have decided to put that aside for now. I’ve moved on to learning to make balloon animals.
I got home, heated some beans and took a nap. Now I am going to get Peyton and take her to the volleyball game.
Movies: Also ran.
•”Z” The first foreign movie I saw with English subtitles. 1969 film seen in 1971. Do I need to say more?
•”Butterfly Effect” Did you ever wish you could go back in time and fix things? Alternate universe.
•”What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”
•”Yesterday” Came of age during the Beatles era. How could I not love this. And another alternate universe!
•”Metropolis” I hoped Mount Carmel would again have a movie theater. I was impressed with this silent move and the venue. Too many people would rather watch TV. Where do kids go in their first date now? There were four of us in the audience that night. The crowds only went down from then.
•”Easy Rider” All Star lineup. Ah, to be free.
•”October Sky” Echo One, Sputnik, “We do this not because it is easy, but because it is hard.” JFK
I’ve wanted to be an astronaut since 1962. I tried in 1984, but I didn’t make the first cut.
•Sweet November (1968)
Dan picked up Peyton and a friend!
January 22, 2020
I watched another episode of “For All Man Kind” then checked the rain gauge and sent my daily report.
I took the 3 grandkids to school. Next stop ENT doctor. He stuck a flexible rod with a light and camera up my nose until it went down my throat. He said I’m fine for someone my age.
Got home, the school nurse called and asked me to get Peyton. I did and am home now. I’m thinking about making a twice baked potato for supper.
I’m going solar! I think I'll join some kind of solar farm coop. Prices will be 20% lower than Ameren for at least 16 years. No contract, no sign up fees. I hope it is legit.
January 23, 2020
Not much going on this morning. Balanced accounts and tried to figure out the bank’s new app and on-line only to find out it won’t be available until Monday.
We met Suzanne for lunch. We all had avocado toast.
I made a candle this afternoon from old candles.

6:30 AM. I’ve been up for an hour. I watched an episode of “For All America.” Things are falling apart. I don’t see how they can be fixed. If they aren’t, if things get worse, I’ll likely stop watching it. I’m watching for that feel good feeling, not sadness and defeat.
I’m following the impeachment trial as closely as many of the senators are. I’ve got a Fidget Spinner around here somewhere.
I hope the weather allows me to take a walk this morning.
Didn’t walk or anything else of consequence.
January 25, 2020
It seems empty to journal about nothing, but maybe there is some value in it to someone.
Daily schedule:
Get up at 3:30 go pee, let the dog out.
Go to bed 4:30

Go to bed.
Repeat.
Get up
Last episodes for the season for Servant and For All Mankind. I don’t want to spoil For All Mankind for possible viewers, but it’s looking up.
I did get a call from Peyton. I took her a friend and the boys out for lunch and did a little grocery shopping.

It seems empty to journal about nothing, but maybe there is some value in it to someone.
Daily schedule:
Get up at 3:30 go pee, let the dog out.
Go to bed 4:30
Get up between 5:30 and 7:30.
Dog, coffee, rain, snow, hail (CoCoRaHS) report.
I’ll skip toiletries and meals unless there is an event. I log my food intake separately.
Go to bed.
Repeat.
Get up
Last episodes for the season for Servant and For All Mankind. I don’t want to spoil For All Mankind for possible viewers, but it’s looking up.

Read.
I’m trying to make a large flower out of a peach basket bottom.
I walked my section of the KRT. Temperature 32° F. Humidity 82%. Wind 8 MPH from the SE. Time 10:30 to 12:00.
Today nature is many colors of browns, grays and whites for most of the walk, but I notice tiny purple juniper berries as I near the end.
Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.
Bike tires of different widths, Park District maintenance tires, dogs, deer, coyotes?, boots, shoes and dots from my walking sticks. I haven’t seen signs of a bear since fall.
The trail is frozen in the deep shadows and my sticks vibrate and ring. In the sun they strike softly and make those little divots.

I got up and got ready to go to the Cassem’s, but Sarah's dentist appointment was canceled.
I’ve finished the peach basket bottom flower. I could work on it more, but it would be like... this!
We picked up the DeRouchie girls after school. Their dad is working the evening shift and their mom is on a business trip to L.A.
Georgia took Kayla to play practice after supper. (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) we picked her up at 8:30 and took the kids home and stayed until Rob got home at 11:09.

I worked at St. Thomas telling stories, “Little Lost Lizz” and a tall tale about fishing written by Devan. It makes me happy feeling needed and making the kids smile.
I put up posters for CCBB around St. Joe, Sidney and Philo. After school we repeated yesterday’s after school schedule.

I don’t send Christmas cards, but I have been preparing Valentines Day cards for a dozen of my closest love ones and friends that might like butterflies. If you didn't get a card it doesn't mean I don't love you. Because I do.
There was about a quarter of an inch of snow last night. If I am going to shovel I need to hurry before it melts.
I picked up Peyton after school and took her to an orthodontist appointment. Afterward I took Peyton to DQ and got her dinner and me a chocolate milkshake and took a couple of kids meals to the boys.

I didn’t do anything today. Well, a little paper work, a little online gaming and a little TV. Fixed avocado toast for supper. I still hope to read some. I don’t like doing nothing.

What a day. I worked on the taxes and would have finished but I don’t have my social security information yet. I went through the Spring schedule at Homer Lake and sent in the days I can work.
I decided to paint a field of poppies on the lid of my cigar box music box. I liked the unfinished look of the plain box, but the bouquet on top just didn’t fit the picture. I like it much better now.
Went to the DQ and the St. Joe IGA. I’m losing it. I put Georgia’s blizzard in the refrigerator instead of the freezer and didn’t find it until several hours later. I’ve done this several times now.
We went to the eighth grade basketball game to watch Emma cheer. It was actually a good game. St. Thomas players are great shots. And Emma is always so cute.
When we got home we found Earl had gotten on the back porch and eaten 3 or 4 cups of bird seed and a handful of blue berries I was going to feed the birds.
